Adding your address to USPS
If your address isn’t accepted when you try to sign up for SmartLess Mobile, or when you are updating your e911 address after moving, it usually means the United States Postal Service (USPS) hasn’t added it to their system yet. SmartLess Mobile uses USPS address validation during sign-up to confirm service availability, and to help ensure 911 calls are routed correctly in an emergency.
Once USPS adds your address to their system, you’ll be able to complete sign-up without any issues.
Why USPS address validation matters
USPS address records support accurate E911 (Enhanced 911) routing. This helps emergency services receive the correct location information if you ever need to call 911.
If an address isn’t listed in USPS (or the related Master Street Address Guide, known as MSAG), our system can’t accept it during sign-up.
How to get your address added
Step 1: Confirm your address with local officials
Adding a new address starts at the city or county level—not with USPS.
What to do:
-
Contact your local city or county office that manages addresses (often the addressing office, 911 coordinator, or planning/zoning department)
-
They will confirm and officially assign your address
-
Once approved, they update the county’s address database (MSAG), which allows USPS to add it
Tip: If you’re not sure who to contact, try searching:
-
addressing office + your city or county
-
911 addressing coordinator + your county
Step 2: Request USPS to add the address
After your local officials approve the address, you can request USPS registration.
How to request it:
-
Visit your local USPS office or
-
Contact the USPS Address Management System (AMS) office for your ZIP code
You may be asked to provide proof of residence, such as:
-
A lease or deed
-
A utility bill
-
Paperwork from the county assigning your address
USPS typically updates new addresses within a few weeks.
Step 3: Complete your SmartLess Mobile sign-up
Once your address appears in USPS tools (like the USPS ZIP Code Lookup):
-
Open the SmartLess Mobile app
-
Enter or update your E911 address
-
Restart the sign-up or activation process
If your address shows up in USPS but still isn’t accepted by SmartLess Mobile, contact us and we’ll review it manually.
Need service right away? Here’s a temporary option
If you need service before USPS adds your address, you can temporarily use the closest USPS-recognized address nearby—such as a cross street or a neighboring address.
Important:
This temporary address is used only for emergency (911) routing. It won’t affect mail delivery, and you can update it to your exact address as soon as USPS adds it.
