WiFi Calling outside the U.S.

Traveling abroad? WiFi Calling lets you stay connected as long as you have a WiFi connection. When enabled, your phone can make and receive calls over WiFi—even outside the U.S.—without relying on a local cellular network.

Calling U.S. numbers over WiFi while abroad

When you’re outside the U.S. and connected to WiFi, calls to U.S. numbers work much like they do at home:

  • No international roaming charges apply

  • Your unlimited U.S. calling still works

  • Calls are placed over WiFi, not a cellular network

As long as you’re on WiFi, your phone behaves as if it’s still in the U.S.

Calling local (non-U.S.) numbers over WiFi

If you use WiFi Calling to dial a local number in the country you’re visiting (for example, calling an Italian number while in Italy), international calling rates apply. These are the same rates you’d pay if you made the call from the U.S.

SmartLess Mobile plans include calling to 200+ countries. Check our international calling destinations for details.

Important tips for traveling

To get the best experience with WiFi Calling while abroad, keep these tips in mind:

Make sure WiFi Calling is turned on

  • Enable WiFi Calling before you leave the U.S. When active, you’ll see a WiFi Calling indicator on your phone.

Use Airplane Mode with WiFi

  • To avoid connecting to a foreign cellular network:
  1. Turn on Airplane Mode

  1.  Turn WiFi back on.

This ensures your calls go over WiFi only.

Keep your E911 address up to date

  • WiFi Calling requires a registered E911 address, so emergency services can attempt to locate you if you place a 911 call over WiFi. Make sure this address is accurate in your SmartLess Mobile account before traveling.

Emergency calling considerations

WiFi Calling can support 911 calls, but it may not work the same way as cellular 911 service. Location information may be limited, inaccurate, or unavailable depending on your device, WiFi network, or environment. Always be prepared to clearly state your location and phone number if you contact emergency services.

911 service may not be available or reliable outside the U.S.

Helpful reminder

WiFi Calling works best on strong, stable WiFi. Call quality depends on the quality of the internet connection, and public WiFi networks may vary in reliability.
