Troubleshooting your Texts (SMS) and MMS

Having trouble sending or receiving text or picture messages? Follow these steps to resolve common SMS and MMS issues.

Using iMessage or RCS?

iMessage (iPhone) and RCS (Android) use mobile data or Wi-Fi rather than traditional SMS/MMS. For help with these services, see: Troubleshooting iMessage and RCS

Step 1: Restart your phone

A quick restart can often clear minor issues and restore messaging functionality. Power off your phone, wait a few seconds, and turn it back on.

Step 2: Check international SMS

When sending texts from the U.S. to to international numbers:

  1. Include the correct country code

  1. Use the + sign (press and hold 0), followed by the country code and phone number

    • Example: To message Mexico from the U.S.: +52 XXXXXXXXXX

Step 3: Enable MMS messaging

MMS allows you to send pictures, videos, and group messages. It’s usually enabled by default, but it’s worth checking. We recommend enabling iMessage and RCS to ensure you have the best messaging experience available.

Using iPhone

  1. Open Settings

  1. Tap Apps

  1. Select Messages

  1. Make sure MMS Messaging is toggled ON

Using Android (steps may vary by manufacturer)

  1. Open Google Messages

  1. Tap your profile picture (top right)

  1. Go to Messages Settings

  1. Select Advanced

  1. Make sure Auto-download MMS is ON

  1. Make sure Group messaging is set to send an MMS reply to all recipients

Step 4: Reset MMS APN settings

APN (Access Point Name) settings help your phone connect to mobile data. Resetting them restores SmartLess Mobile defaults.

Using iPhone

  1. Open Settings

  1. Tap Cellular

  1. Choose your number under SIMs

  1. Tap Cellular Data Network

  1. Select Reset Settings

Using Android

  1. Open Settings

  1. Tap Network & Internet (or Connections)

  1. Select Mobile Networks

  1. Tap Access Point Names

  1. Select Reset to default

Note: Steps may vary slightly depending on your Android device and software version. Use the Settings search bar if you don’t see these options.

Step 5: Check coverage and signal

Weak signals can delay or block SMS/MMS messages. Coverage may be affected by:

  • Buildings, walls, or terrain

  • Tall trees or foliage

  • Large crowds (concerts, events)

Use our coverage map to confirm SmartLess Mobile service in your area.

Step 6: Verify subscription and billing

  • Messages to premium or short-code numbers is restricted. Your SmartLess Mobile plan won’t allow charges for these numbers

  • Check your account subscription and payment method in MyAccount or the SmartLess Mobile app if you’re having trouble sending messages.
